Book Blurb

Detective Gary Mitchell and psychic Dan Porter have a new cold case to tackle, and new leads to research in the hunt for Gary’s brother’s killer. Their life in Boston has settled into a comfortable rhythm.

But when forensic discoveries in a recent robbery gone wrong share similarities with their three-year-old cold case, all they can do is follow the evidence—and Dan’s gift—which leads them in an unexpected direction, way out of their comfort zone.

Gary and Dan find themselves in a shadowy world where they can trust no one, with unseen opponents who want them to back away from their investigation—and suddenly they’re in a race they have to win.

Because if they don’t, the consequences could be more far-reaching than they could possibly imagine.

Book Review

Book three in the ‘Second Sight’ series has Detective Mitchell and Dan Porter still adjusting to being in a relationship and living together. While Gary has some niggling doubts about how quickly the relationship happened, Dan is all in. He’s waited a decade plus to have his visions confirmed and knows without hesitation Gary is his partner. Together, they are continuing to settle into their new roles with the Boston PD in a “cold case” capacity.

‘Out of Sight’ begins with their next cold case(s) – a couple of murders that don’t add up and down the rabbit hole they go! This plot becomes big and robust very quickly. From some seemingly random murders, Gary and Dan find themselves in the middle of an international bioterrorism plot that takes them to Johannesburg, South Africa.

For myself, this installment was skirting the realm of plausibility and starting to drift into more of a “thriller” genre/trope and away from “cozy mystery”. Given the length of the story, the author did an excellent job of pulling it off and the characters were kept plausible and real in that nobody was running off alone to confront the villains. What I felt was lost in the overarching plot was Dan’s psychic ability. While a strong plot device in book one and two, here it felt kind of buried and like more of an afterthought.

Rest assured, there are no cliffhangers. The mystery is resolved and the overarching sub-plot from book one and two has not been forgotten. If you’ve read ‘In His Sight’ or ‘In Plain Sight’, you’ll know what I’m talking about. Haven’t read them? I’m not dropping any spoilers! Definitely read these in the order they were published. Meanwhile, it looks like book four will be released in 2025.
