Tully Larson has loved tropical storms since he was a kid and spent his summers with his dad in the wilds of Kakadu National Park. He’s happiest outdoors, a rough and ready kind of guy who loves the power of Mother Nature and chasing the thrill of electrical storms every chance he gets.
Jeremiah Overton, a fulminologist from Melbourne, chases storms for a whole different reason. Lightning has shaped his entire life and he’s driven to study it, to understand it, so heading to Kakadu in the middle of the storm season is a logical thing to do. After all, the Top End is the lightning capital of Australia.
Tully wasn’t sure how a week at his remote bunker with an academic type would pan out. And Jeremiah didn’t expect much from the storm-chasing cowboy who volunteered to take him.
But both men know all too well that when opposites attract, lightning strikes.
“…When love strikes someone like lightning, so powerful and intense it can’t be denied. It’s beautiful and messy, cracking a chest open and spilling their soul out for the world to see. … Once the thunderbolt hits, your life is irrevocably changed.” ~ M. Darhowe, Sempre
Some people run away from things that frighten them, while others run toward them. Jerimiah Overton is one of those rare people who does the latter. That's why he became a fulminologist, someone who studies lightning. To further his research, Jeremiah makes a trip to Darwin, a place known for violent thunderstorms with intense lightning. He has something to prove, not only to his colleagues but to himself.
All Tully Larson knows is that the man he will meet, Dr. Jeremiah Overton, has a Ph.D. in fulminology. Tully will be his tour guide, taking him to where Dr. Overton will conduct scientific research involving lightning. Tully expects an older man, not one near his age, handsome with the most beautiful blue eyes imaginable. Tully must remind himself that Dr. Overton is a client, not a prospective lover.
The beginning of their association is rocky because they are so different. Tully is carefree and open, whereas Jeremiah is serious and guarded. They find more than they initially realized as they peel back the onions that are their personalities. Tully and Jeremiah grow to respect and trust each other and begin to work seamlessly in and out of bed.
'Outrun the Rain' is a whirlwind of a story. Jeremiah and Tully are complex, engaging, and irresistible. Jeremiah's transition from being closed and suspicious to trusting was touching. Tully is a big, bright, sweetheart of a man, just the kind of person Jeremiah needed. Thanks, N.R. I can hardly wait to dive into the next book.
