The mystery of those who are different from the norm, who see the world in a way most “normal” people cannot comprehend, is at the core of this story of discovery, revelations, and a love that spans centuries. What pulled me in at first is the humorous way Angel Martinez describes the meeting of Diego – an aspiring writer with a big heart – and Finn – a man who seems completely disoriented, maybe even slightly insane, and about to jump off the Brooklyn Bridge. There is an immediate connection between the two that intrigued me, and the way Finn looks at the modern-day world made me laugh. I wanted to know more and was soon plunged into a journey of discovery that had me spellbound.
Diego has a habit of rescuing those who need help. He has more compassion than sense, or so it seems at times, so it is no surprise that he wants to help the man he fears is about to take his own life. Diego quickly discovers there is a lot more to Finn than he expected or could have imagined, but to truly understand who Finn is takes him a little longer. Diego has to deconstruct the walls between him and the spiritual world before he can believe the full extent of their relationship.
Finn is a fae, a pooka to be more precise, and he has been cut off from the Otherworld and everything he knows. He has been in the Dreaming to protect his mind from a horrific memory, and nothing is like he remembers it when he finally wakes up. The huge city poisons and confuses him, iron and modern medicine threaten to kill him, and while he likes and even admires Diego, it is clear that staying where he is, with no links to trees and rivers and sunshine, he will not survive.
Diego and Finn’s true history emerges only slowly, but once they make their way to a cabin in the middle of nowhere, Finn recovers and their true adventure begins. It gets quite gruesome at one point when a supernatural evil almost kills them, but on the whole, this is a story of discovery, revelations, and a budding love affair that had me rooting for both men, cheering them along in their search for love.
If you like action and adventure with your romance, if two men who share secrets neither of them initially recall are your thing, and if you’re looking for an entertaining read that is funny, suspenseful and deeply emotional, then you will probably like this novel as much as I do. The Christmas-themed final chapter (originally a separate short story) is particularly charming!
