Pierce is one of the main characters in Ana Ashley's book 'Picture Perfect’. As much as possible, Pierce attempts to lead a controlled, structured life; he has forgotten how it feels to relax and enjoy himself. He doesn't want to be at his ex's wedding but feels obligated to attend. Still, he feels out of place. A younger man, Thatcher, catches Pierce's eye, but he is a walking contradiction: charming and affable, well-dressed, yet unkempt and disheveled at the same time. When the stranger propositions Pierce, he leads him into his ex's house, where they have a passionate but anonymous encounter.

 

Thatcher sees the world differently. When he notices what he believes is inefficient, he is driven to improve it. For instance, at his last job, he invented a filing system that made perfect sense but only to him. Another example: he tries to make the coffee machine more efficient but instead of improving it, it flies across the room, wreaking havoc as it goes. This episode gets him fired... yet again. Everyone likes Thatcher, but few understand his contradictory, inconsistent manner.

 

Then his cousin, Noah, emails Thatcher to say his husband's company has an opening and that Thatcher should apply. After doing some research on the company, he calls Noah back to say he appreciates the thought but doesn't think he is qualified; Noah disagrees. He tells Thatcher that he would be a perfect fit. Considering his job history, Thatcher is beyond skeptical. Still, after much encouragement, Thatcher agrees to contact the company. When Thatcher applies, he is hired right away.

 

Pierce hates change. With his PA retiring, he is way past being uncomfortable and wondering how he will adjust to working with a new assistant. Three days have gone by since Thatcher started, and Pierce has yet to meet him. However, Pierce and Thatcher finally meet when they collide, and Thatcher spills the coffee he is carrying onto Pierce. Pierce recognizes that his new employee is the same man he'd had a sexual encounter with at his ex's wedding, but he pretends not to know him.

 

Predictably, Thatcher trudges along in his usual, helpful, friendly way, with many of his efforts going awry, while others succeed in an extraordinarily brilliant way. Pierce's attitude changes over time; Thatcher's well-intentioned but often disaster-prone efforts shift from agitation to amusement to endearment.

 

I loved Thatcher. He reminded me of myself, always thinking differently, coming up with off-the-wall solutions to problems that others swear won't work. Yet, he trudged on, being his true, but eccentric self. It was harder to like Pierce. His coldness put me off. Even though I realized it was hurting him more than anything, it took a gentle soul like Thatcher to help him open up and enjoy life. Pierce helped Thatcher by showing him that being different isn't necessarily wrong. Thank you, Anna, for the laughs and the tears and mostly, for bringing Thatcher and Pierce together.
