It’s not a real case, he’s not my boyfriend, and we aren’t partners.
Three lies I told myself for survival.
After ten months of shamefully stalking and showing up randomly on Tallus’s doorstep at midnight (for reasons), the sinfully hot records clerk decided he’d had enough of my games.
In fact, he went out of his way to bring me the most ridiculous case (it was not a case) on the planet as an excuse to push me over the line (he wanted a date). Our arrangement (hooking up) didn’t suit him any longer.
Could I say no? Of course not (this was Tallus).
Five days, I told him. Five days to prove his silly theory, then we were done.
Little did I know, Tallus had a deadline of his own.
Investigating a mind-controlling-murdering psychic was hard enough (because it was not a thing), but resisting Tallus’s charm was the real challenge.
It turned out, I was wrong about a few things.
The case might be a case after all.
Tallus had potential as a partner.
And after all was said and done…
I wasn’t sure I could let him go.
“People are afraid to heal because their entire identity is centered around the trauma they’ve experienced. They have no idea who they are outside of trauma and tat unknown is terrifying.” ~ Ebonee Davis
Tallus Domingo, of 'Power of the Mind' by Nicky James, faces a dilemma. His best friend, Memphis, wants to visit a psychic, but there are some terrible reviews. After further investigation, Tallus senses that something is happening that is far more nefarious than simple extortion. Tallus needs help before going to the police; he needs someone like a private investigator to help develop his suspicions into a convincing argument. Tallus knows whom he needs to contact: Diem Krause.
Instead of calling Diem, Tallus goes directly to his office. Diem is startled when the man he's been semi-stalking for months now stands in his doorway. Diem usually has to emotionally prepare himself for one-on-one situations, particularly with Tallus; his communication ability is nearly nonexistent. When Diem asks why he is there, Tallus taunts him by asking why it's okay to show up anytime at his place but not for him to come there.
When Diem recovers from Tallus's unannounced visit, he asks why Tallus is there. Tallus begins to explain the psychic and his suspicions about the extent of her "services." Diem discourages Tallus, saying that it would be difficult to prove anything. Tallus persists, then reveals that he needs a Private Investigator to help gather evidence and tries to persuade Diem to help him. At first Diem refuses but takes Tallus more seriously when he learns that suspected murders may be involved.
Working together is challenging for Diem and Tallus, but whatever it takes, Tallus is determined to help Diem overcome his trauma so they can have a better life.
'Power of the Mind' is different from a usual love story. It's dark, gritty, and carnal. Tallus and Diem's characters are well-developed and dynamic. Diem is practically crippled by childhood trauma, while Tallus is strong, determined, and calculating. My feelings about the two were all over the place, but ultimately, I was cheering for them. Thanks, Nicky, for the turbulent ride.
