Once upon a time, Ghost was the best enforcer the Reapers MC had ever known—until the Hydra appeared and destroyed everything he’d worked for. After witnessing corruption down to the very core of their club, his only option was to take off his cut and leave.
But no matter how far he's run, or how many things about himself he's changed, Nate has come to realize he will never be able to escape the man he was. Ugly monsters have risen from the ashes of everything he burned down, and now they're threatening his future.
Nate understands that the only hope the Broken Chains have to win against Hydra is to cut out his heart. And he's willing to risk anything to make that happen, including his own freedom, to ensure everyone walks away from that final fight. Especially Rory, the only man who has ever held Nate’s heart in a vise.
For Rory, Nate’s willing to be reckless. For Rory, Nate’s willing to take every single one of Hydra’s hits. For Rory, Nate’s willing to do anything.
Rory knows the chaos must end—one way or another, someone isn’t walking out alive. He's tired of running, and he's tired of hiding. He didn't ask to be born into the MC life, and he knows it's not his future, but a man with a Nomad patch on his cut and tenderness in his calloused hands gives him a reason to stay. All Rory really has to do is live.
Well, that, and to convince Nate that in spite of their age difference, and in spite of their history, they can survive this rising tide.
The Broken Chains motorcycle club isn’t for the faint of heart. I have never really been interested in MC stories before, but E.M. Lindsey’s series has kept me riveted. This is Rory and Nate’s story and believe me when I say these books need to be read in order and please take the author’s content warnings seriously.
If you believe that people with disabilities and/or handicaps can’t handle it, you are sorely mistaken. Rory has been blind from birth, born to a sociopathic pig who was head of the Reapers MC, and half-brother to Smokey, the president of Broken Chains. When Smokey heard that his dad was considering having Rory killed, he took Rory and left in the middle of the night, and they went across the country to hide from the Reapers and anyone who could narc on their whereabouts. Interestingly enough, Rory wasn’t happy with his brother, as Smokey just ripped him from the only world he knew regardless of how awful it had been. Rory is all grown up now, finishing his PhD, liaison for the Broken Chains, and still secretly in love with Nate.
In his years with the Reapers, Nate was known as Ghost and most didn’t want to cross him. He left the Reapers when Hyde began showing his sadistic tendencies, although not before Nate rescued the child Rory was from the hands of that madman. Nate leaving caused a rift with Smokey and Rory and it’s only been a few years that the three have been back on any semblance of the family relationship they shared for so many years. Nate always knew that Rory had a crush on him when he was a boy, but being forced to see Rory as the man he’s become has Nate re-evaluating more than just what he wants from the rest of his life.
To be honest, I struggled some with this final installment. Throughout the first four installments I was so eager for Rory and Nate’s story I could almost taste it. Perhaps it was the buildup I had created in my mind that caused me to be a little disappointed in their tale. I felt like I hit a certain point in the book and it was insta… insta-love, insta-lust, insta-feelings, insta-everything and it just seemed, to me, that it completely cheapened everything these two men had gone through in their lives. Not to mention, the big culmination/climax of the end of Hyde came within a few pages. What? He’s been the big BAD throughout the previous stories and now his capture and elimination was relegated to less than a full chapter. I’m sorry to say it didn’t ring true for me.
My disappointment in this finale is probably more my fault than it is the author’s. With that said, I can honestly say that if you want a realistic MC with truly morally gray people who don’t always make judgments based on the best criteria, hot and sexy men with wonderful HEAs, then I’d suggest jumping into this series. Fast.
