Finding answers before he falls in love is imperative.

When Shadow, the mysterious shifter from Alrik, arrives at the clinic so weak he can't speak, the Chameleons gather to nurse the shifter back to health. Blood tests reveal more questions than answers. Who is Shadow? What is Shadow?

One Chameleon doesn't care that his boss is distrustful of the shifter. For years, Seger has longed for reciprocated love, and he isn't about to dismiss his growing feelings for Shadow because of unanswered questions. The need to protect the smaller shifter is strong, and the quiet sadness Seger recognizes in Shadow's eyes draws him in further.

Shadow has loved and lost too many times to allow himself to fall once again. While he enjoys spending time with Seger, he knows he's been called to the Chameleons for a reason. Shadow may not know the guise in which the danger will appear, but he's confident it's coming.

Finding answers before he falls in love is imperative.

Book Review

Continuing the story seamlessly following the first book, the second installment opened up a totally new view on this shifter world and took off in a direction I have not quite seen before. A few books have ventured into exploring the origins of shifters, but the answers (and questions) this one raises are quite unique as far as I know. It fits in nicely with the fact that the C-7 or chameleon shifters can shift into more than one animal, and brings back Alrik and Ben, the vet, from the first book, neatly incorporating them into the ongoing story line.

Shadow is a mystery. He has appeared from nowhere, isn’t a known shifter type according to the blood tests they do, and says he is here to help. Specifically to help Ben who was bitten by a wolf shifter and is now, according to Shadow, beginning to change because Shadow licked his wounds closed. Seger is the only one willing to believe him, and Shadow is very tempted to fall in love with him. But he also has an important mission, even thought he doesn’t know the details other than wanting to help Ben. He says he never knows, but he displays some interesting abilities beyond shifting and tells Seger about some memories that begin to question everything the guys know about shifters and their origins.

Seger is falling for Shadow as soon as he first meets him. The man is smaller, seems to need help, and is so caring and concerned about everyone's welfare that Seger can't help himself. His protective instincts flare up when the other C-7s, especially their boss Nero, seem to do nothing but attack Shadow. But Seger's feelings soon go deeper, and his determination to be there for Shadow, who is more than lonely, lasts through the initial revelations of what and who Shadow may be. To Seger, he is a man who needs to be loved, never mind all the other issues, and Seger is the one to love and protect him, just because he exists.

None of the larger mystery of what this threat that Shadow feels coming is gets solved, but there are some disturbing hints. The C-7 come up with a plan, but nobody knows if it's going to work, or even if it's the right plan. And let me warn you: the ending is super-abrupt, and makes this volume feel more like a serial, not a complete story. If you don't like that, wait until the series is completed, because this will only annoy you. As it is, I screamed in frustration! If you like shifter stories with a larger mythology and context, if you want to read about a super-lonely man finding love after a very, very long time spent alone, and if you're looking for a hot read with lots of mystery that will last into the next few books (as far as I can see), then you will probably like this novella.
