Brendan is having a really bad day—well, life actually. It turns out his deadbeat dad was actually a god, who is now dead, and Brendan has inherited his powers. Also his enemies. With the help of a handsome, fire-winged angel and a fallen god turned bartender, he hopes to figure out his powers before rival gods kill him. But the course of godhood, much like love, never runs smoothly.

I was super excited at the prospect of a new story by Andrea Speed. Seeing as how she wrote one of my all time favorite series, I knew for a fact that I would love the writing and I was not wrong. The description interested me because, hey, inheriting the powers of a death god? Way cool, as far as I was concerned, and the fact that Bren had fallen in love with his guardian angel, Dar, seemed like a wonderful storyline to me.
The fact that the novella begins with Bren having no memory of anything, including who he is, because he and Dar had just jumped dimensions, meant the newest work of this author was starting off with a bang. I really felt for Bren. I mean, he grew up thinking his dad was a second-rate magician who disappeared when he was three. To discover his dad was the disgraced god, Arawn, and that he, himself, was a demigod, was an awful lot to take in. Factor in his dad transferring his powers to Bren before his dad was killed, falling in love and being loved by an actual angel, and meeting Bob, a fallen god, whatever that is, made for an exciting beginning of this story.
Dar and Bren need Bob's help. Bren has no idea how to use the powers his father transferred to him, in fact, he hasn't even begun to come into them yet, and there's an evil (aren't they always) female god by the name of Eris out to kill Bren and steal his powers. Along the way of trying to help Bren unlock his god powers, Dar and Bren get separated, Bob takes Dar to meet a death god who lives in exile, Bren gets stolen, for lack of a better term, and gets his god powers forcibly unlocked. Unfortunately, Bren hasn't got a clue how to control them.
This was, in typical Andrea Speed fashion, a most exciting novella. There were infinite dimensions, gods, angels, and demons. It was wonderful how poor Bren tried to deal with everything being thrown at him and not understanding most of it. Even better was watching Dar try to understand these human emotions, i.e., love, fear, worry, while still protecting Bren. Bren is basically terrified throughout the entire story, and I don't blame him, while Dar is protective and worrying, but Bob is sarcastic and rude, which I loved. This author knows how to write the dry, sarcastic wit!
I really enjoyed this story and can only hope that there will be more. Please, Ms. Speed?
