Part I ~ reviewed by Serena Yates
Ange and Robert's story is very touching and as much about love and finding that one special person and opening your heart to him as it is about kink and submission. What begins as an act of charity when Robert rescues Ange after he got beaten up and takes him in, slowly evolves into the recognition that Robert is attracted to Ange. He hesitates to let himself go, to unleash his domination on the fragile-looking dancer, but eventually, he cannot deny they both want more than just friendship.
Robert is stuck in emotional limbo after losing both his parents within a short time of each other. The grief has been clouding his judgment, and has stopped him from living the D/s lifestyle he really needs to be happy. But that isn't the only reason he hesitates. Ange is younger than him, seems fragile, and works for Robert, all reasons for Robert to hesitate. It takes Ange himself to make him realize he isn't the only one yearning for more between them, plus the thought of losing the man he has grown to love, even if he doesn’t admit it to himself at first, for him to start acting.
Ange is not your usual everyday young man. His origins are hinted at (when he mentions "recent North Pole layoffs" and "other elves"), but not taken seriously by Robert. Who in their right mind would want to believe what Ange seems to imply? But his whole demeanor, how he acts, and how desperate he is to work in Robert's vintage toy store speaks for itself. If you wanted to believe in elves, the "evidence" is in this story for you to find. Of course, that is just my overactive imagination, since Ange's actual background is as a dancer. And his talents are put to good use in the story, making some of the scenes absolutely beautiful.
A very touching story about the discovery of love, as well as the realization both partners need more than a vanilla relationship – despite initial appearances to the contrary and old fears. It is also a super-hot tale of two men finding satisfaction and happiness in playing the roles they were meant to fulfill. If you like stories with a touch of mystery and possibly the supernatural, if you enjoy reading about loving D/s relationships, and if you're looking for a Christmas-themed read with as much heart as heat, you will probably like this novella.
Part II ~ reviewed by Christy Duke
A man mired in grief and loss and a young man struggling with trauma are the heart of Joey W. Hill’s ‘Submissive Angel’. Had the author only ever written part one it would have still been a lovely holiday story about finding love. However, part two makes this an even better tale because it picks up immediately following the conclusion of part one, and then the reader gets far more insight into both Robert and Ange.
Until Ange fell into Robert’s life, he has been simply going through the motions having lost both of his parents within the past couple of years. He’d been caring for them at his home while keeping his business going, so his home is no longer a sanctuary but simply a reminder of what he’s lost. It takes Ange to help Robert make his home less “weighed down by memory” and more “let the memories shine through.” Throughout this holiday season both men are learning their way around their D/s relationship while also helping each other begin to deal with the baggage they each carry.
I can’t say that the revelations about Ange’s past came as a surprise as it stood to reason that something truly heartbreaking had to have happened for this young man to be living on the streets. Particularly with how much Ange loves to dance and how talented he is, Robert guessed he might’ve had some training, but when the truth comes out Robert is shocked and amazed. But it explains so much, and once Ange trusts Robert with the truth, then the real healing can begin.
A beautiful story about the power of love, trust, and the beauty that can be found in a true dominance and submission relationship.
