Book Blurb

When three men turn up in their sleepy little town of Tallowwood, Harry and Asher know something’s wrong. Not because someone could find them, but the fact that Asher’s informant and oldest friend, Yunho, failed to alert them. Messages and phone calls unanswered; Harry and Asher go to Thailand to find Yunho is missing.

Harry and Asher find themselves thrown back into the game of shadows and murder, in a race across the globe to find him and find who’s behind the kidnapping.

The list of their enemies is long, their web of entanglement even longer, and Harry and Asher are about to find out once and for all who is predator and who is prey.

Book Review

“The battleline between good and evil runs through the heart of every man." ~ Paul Tillich

Harry and Asher, in 'The Bait' by N.R. Walker, have lived as Michael and Joshua in a life they never dreamed was possible. Their little house has become a sanctuary for the previous two years, allowing them to live as “normal” people without looking over their shoulders every minute. They have become accustomed to peace and quiet. Unfortunately, that is about to change for the worse.

The local sheriff, August Shaw, is constantly battling with his feelings toward Michael and Joshua Hill (Harry and Asher.) His instincts tell him they're not who they claim to be and are dangerous, yet he can't help but like them. When August spots three suspicious men, he knows he needs to warn Michael and Joshua, even though August suspects what will happen if he does.

August and his partner, Jake, head out to their place. Michael appears exceptionally vigilant when they arrive, knowing they wouldn't call without a good reason. August tells them who and what he saw and why he was suspicious about it: type of boots, foreign accents, general appearance, no fishing rods, and wrong time of year to fish. Michael and Jake listen intently, taking it all in.

After August and Jake leave, Harry and Asher prepare for the mission they never wanted to undertake. The situation's urgency weighs heavily on them, especially Asher, who is concerned about why Yunho, his mentor and father figure, did not warn them as he always has.

They begin the long and treacherous journey to Yunho's private island, where they discover two of Yuhno's associates murdered execution-style and the place ransacked. Yunho and his partner are missing. From the looks of things, it had to be an inside job to be able to pull it off with such expertise. Now, more than ever, Asher is determined to find and punish whoever took Yuhno. However, Harry must remind Asher that they are not as sharp as they once were. They must engage the skill and attitude they once had to survive, much less succeed.

As their mission progresses, things become even more confusing, especially for Asher. Like dominoes, all the beliefs he held are called into question. He is no longer sure what is true and what is not.

I've never had such conflicting feelings about characters as with those in 'The Bait’.  Harry and Asher were cold-blooded killers, but they were lovers as well who weren't afraid to express their feelings for each other. Their lovemaking was often displayed violently but could also be tender and gentle. The story was action-packed and emotionally challenging, giving me a headache trying to piece together all the clues coming at me fast and furiously. Even having read 'The Kite' before, I still couldn't see the end coming. I didn't expect a second book about Asher and Harry, but I'm grateful there was one. Thanks, N.R.
