Book Blurb

Bear shifter Rob Colton is excited about the future, and after graduating, he is ready to start the next phase of his life. He never expects that life to include a frightened young man that darts out in front of his truck. But one whiff of Casey's sweet smell and Rob knows his future is going to be brighter than ever. He has found his true mate.

Orphaned at an early age, Casey Newton has bounced from foster home to foster home, never quite finding a place to call his own. When a big, burly man decides Casey is his true mate, the cold and lonely world Casey grew up in begins to change. For once in his life, someone wants him.

But wanting someone and keeping them safe are two very different things. When the man that has terrorized Casey for most of his life comes after him again, can Casey trust Rob to protect him or will he be tossed away like he has every other time in his life? And will the bond between mates be strong enough to withstand the threat of losing everything they hold dear?

Book Review

A whirlwind romance between fated mates, a bear shifter ready to start his life after graduation, and an orphaned human who has only ever known abuse are at the center of this story. A few twists and turns keep things interesting and a couple of revelations give the ending an unexpected twist. Not everything is as it seems in this shifter world, and while there are similarities with others I have read, there are enough differences to make me curious to find out more. While this is not a suspenseful grand adventure with lots of action, the focus on two men finding happiness and dealing with personal drama and small-minded enemies definitely kept my attention.

Casey has been through hell all his life, being shunted from one foster home to another and never being accepted. He wants to go to college and works very hard to earn enough money to do so, but fate does not seem to be with him. His self-esteem is almost nonexistent and his need for affection and someone who likes him are huge. It’s a good thing he meets Rob when he does – and not just because it saves him from an even worse beating.

Rob is a bear shifter who has just finished college and is extremely proud that he made it at all. I can only imagine how difficult it is for an outdoors-focused bear to sit still and study! All Rob wants is to work in his father’s construction company now that he is done with school, but Fate clearly has other ideas. When Casey runs into him, Rob knows he has found his true mate and from then on everything he does is aimed at protecting Casey and showing him that he is loved and wanted.

Casey can’t believe his luck at having found Rob but learning to accept that he really is mated to such an amazing man takes some getting used to. Casey’s tormentors are not going to let him go either, and while Rob’s family is extremely accepting, there are forces at play that neither Casey nor Rob are aware of. They have to learn to stand together, trust each other, and deal with all the obstacles life throws at them – and that is not an easy task! But throughout all that happens, Rob’s determination and all his “rules” about bears and their mates not only help Casey keep the faith but made me smile more than once.

If you like tornado-like romances between unexpected mates, if you want to watch a hunted man gain confidence and fall in love, and if you’re looking for an entertaining read with lots of sweet moments, some hot loving, and a few suspenseful interruptions to a cute insta-love story, then you will probably like this novella.
