Philanthropist. Humanitarian. Soldier. Spy.

Jared Colter, the head of Torus Intercession, has a secret life he left behind, one that only his closest confidants know about. Normally, the past keeps its secrets, but not this time. Old ghosts come calling to the very doorstep of his new life, when Owen Moss, the person closest to him, goes missing. A carrot left dangling to lure Jared out and into the hands of an unknown enemy.

Owen Moss was once a scared, orphaned boy saved by Jared, but he’s no longer a child even if Jared is having trouble seeing him that way. He’s thirty-two now, in love with Jared, and as Jared’s obliviousness keeps butting up against Owen’s desire, the tension between them keeps escalating. Something has to give, and soon.

With a bounty on his head, Jared races through the brutal underworld of Southeast Asia, in search of Owen. It’s a maze of treachery and murder, where one false move means death. The answer is tied to the man Jared used to be, taking him into the heart of the lion’s den, where he’s forced to face the darkest questions about himself to save the man he loves.

Book Review

An older man who thinks he knows what’s best, and the younger man who knows he doesn’t, are at the heart of this fifth installment in Mary Calmes’s ‘Torus Intercession’ series. I sort of feel as if I’ve been waiting for Jared and Owen’s story ever since the very first installment in this series, and to be honest, I probably have. Luckily for me, this author can bring it and she certainly gave me everything I was hoping for in ‘The Big Fix’.

The action adventure, not to mention the suspense and thrills, are what has drawn me to this series and this book magnifies them by a thousand. It is one heart-stopping moment after the next with snarky comments—a lot of them involving Jared’s age—and enough heat to make your skin burn. Not to mention the star-studded shoutouts and Easter eggs like Darius, Dante, George, Aaron, Miguel, Ceaton, Ian, and Sam. It was enough to have me clutching my pearls… if I owned any.

“Owen, I—”

“No,” he rushed out. “This is my reward. Finally, you’re going to be mine.”

My brain turned back on. “You do realize we’re in imminent danger here.” ~ Owen & Jared

If anyone is wondering whether there’s enough romance (and sex because let’s face it we’re always worrying about enough sex), the author totally delivers the goods. Jared might be significantly older than Owen, but these two are hotter than blazes when they finally get together. Yes, I was going to say “come together”, but I’m trying not to be juvenile. *grins*

I loved all the answers I got in this book, even to questions I didn’t know to ask. Jared’s past is brought to life in all its many incarnations. The bad guys are really, really bad, and the good guys can be a little tarnished, but at the end of the day I was rooting so hard for my white knights. Thank you, Mary, for bringing your best, again, to this love story.
