Jameson Burke is the most arrogant, infuriating human on the planet. He’s also taller, broader, and impossibly hotter than he was before I left town.
For ten years, I dreamed of coming back to O’Leary to open my own bar. Safe to say the reality hasn’t lived up to my expectations. Even though the town’s the same as it ever was -- same beautiful scenery, same wonderful, ridiculous residents -- it’s hard to feel welcome when your first love and childhood best friend makes it clear you’re public enemy number one. And then, oh yeah, when your bar burns to the ground and you’re stuck begging for a place to stay.
But just when I’m ready to give up on the dream entirely, Jamie and I are thrown together in a blizzard and everything changes. One single, scorching night is enough to prove the spark between us never really died, and suddenly I’m dreaming a new dream -- one where Jamie lets go of the past and we build something entirely new… together.
Childhood friends to lovers to enemies, second chances, a great cast of characters, and one of my very favorite small towns makes up ‘The Fire (Love in O’Leary 4)’ by May Archer.
“I’d learned a long, long time ago that life wasn’t fair. Molly died, and Parker left town, and my dad had been… whatever. But I swear to God, the most unjust thing in this whole goddamn unfair world was the way my heart still hurt when Parker Hoffstraeder was hurting.” ~ Jamie
Eleven years and five months ago, give or take a day or two, Parker and Jamie both said things they didn’t mean leaving their friendship and relationship in the dust when Parker headed to Boston for college. I mean, I understand how it happened—they were young, Jamie listened to the wrong person, Parker didn’t stand up for his wants, etc.—but the fact that it has lasted this long is rather ridiculous. In my opinion only! I can see how the entire debacle has occurred and why it has continued for so long, but I spent my time really rooting for these two to figure their crap out. The emotional crap, since the physical is smoking hot and these two were singeing the pages.
“It had always been this way. How had I ever forgotten? It was so easy between us—the fire and the laughter, the love—that I could almost believe it could be this way forever, that I could will it to be this way.” ~ Jamie
I was over the moon and hooting and hollering for these two to get their happy ever after, so when they did, I might have scared a few of my critters. Meh, not the first time and certainly won’t be the last. Regardless, Jamie and Parker’s story is absolutely wonderful and much thanks to Mary Archer for its writing. I’m looking forward to more in this series.
