Dundee
I woke up in a jail cell after a saloon fight which the handsome sheriff said was my fault. My punishment is something called Community Service. It doesn't mean what I thought it did.
Russell
Dundee is a cheat and a liar. And a thief, he's stolen my heart. How can I compete for his affection against the flirty inventor with a steam powered vehicle who has just arrived in town?
A sheriff and a man who cheats at poker sounded fun as a pairing and I got some laughs, as expected, when reading this entertaining short story. It is called a “weird Western” for a reason, and not just because the main characters are unusual. This “Western” is set in a Steampunk universe and stars a steam-driven sort-of-car as well as a mechanical dog. A very enjoyable read!
Dundee is a bit of a crook who makes his money playing poker, never staying in one place for too long. He also “cleverly” disguises himself as more stupid than he is so that other poker players won’t believe he cheats. Not that it works when he gets caught by handsome sheriff Russell… The misunderstanding about what “community service” means was very funny. At least I thought so, Dundee was more relieved to find out his fears were unjustified.
Russel is the small-town sheriff in this fictional town and a typical tough guy who will not admit he has feelings at all, never mind fond ones for Dundee. He fears being outclassed by an inventor, Virgil, who comes to town driving a steam-powered vehicle and a mechanical dog. Russel’s first reaction is to step back, probably out of fear of losing the competition for Dundee’s heart.
If you like quirky stories about gay men in fictional Western towns, if you want to read about a Steampunk world set in the early 1900s, and if you enjoy tales with lots of ambiance and some fun characters, then you will probably like this short story.
