Book Blurb

After saving the prince from certain death and convincing the sun priests that he’s not dead but in magical stasis, a high priest of the Lord of Night should have time to relax and enjoy his tryst with the captain of the palace guard. Between the nobles blackmailing him over his past and the sun priests intent on staking and beheading the prince (to save his soul), Rak’s in deeper trouble than ever. And to make matters worse, the captain doesn’t even remember their tryst.

Book Review

As this series develops and the plot begins to thicken, more and more of the background to this world, its gods, and all kinds of threats emerge in this third volume. It’s not only true for the larger picture, the main character, high priest S’Rak of the Lord of the Night, also manages to get himself into more and more trouble. He may have saved his half brother, the prince who has to survive if the armies of the Unmaker are to be defeated, from an assassination in the last book, but the prince’s wounds were so severe he had to put him into magical stasis – with the result that some of the more traditional sun priests believe the prince is now “undead” and needs to be killed to save his soul.

S’Rak - Rak to his friends - fights a war on several fronts in this book. He has to try to save the prince, and luckily one of the sun priests is educated enough to support his efforts. Rak is also determined to set free the slave who was assigned to him by the palace; he likes Tebber and hates slavery. But in the process he has to make a deal with an evil courtier and suffers the painful consequences in a few scenes that read much like torture. Then there is Rak’s lingering carnal attraction to the captain of the palace guard – who is rumored to have sworn an oath of purity. And then there is Rak’s clever ruse to distract the aggressive sun priests by causing a “rabbit plague” in the sun temple – hence the title of this book – and that provides great comic relief.

If you have liked Rak’s world and all its complicated rules so far, if you want to find out how he begins to deal with all the political and theological intrigue against him, and if you’re looking for a read that is full of surprises, danger, and some very hot sex, then you will probably like this novella.
