It’s hard being the PA for the Holiday Spirit.

Julian is more dedicated than most, and knows the job inside and out. But that doesn’t mean he’ll still have a job when the new Holiday Spirit is elected. It also doesn't mean he’s immune to the *cough* charms of the office, but that's a whole other problem.

Book Review

As “unconventional” winter holiday stories go, this is a good one. It’s funny with just a hint of heat, contains worldbuilding worthy of a much longer story, and has a sort of expected twist that I loved watching develop. The idea of the holiday spirit having a PA struck me as hilarious – but once I thought about it, and looking at it from a human perspective, it makes a lot of sense! One thing is certain – if humans were running the North Pole instead of the magical beings populating the pages of this short story, they would definitely do it exactly the way it is described here. Paperwork, red tape, and interspecies politics included!

Julian is an extremely capable PA, and since he is mortal-born, feels as though he has never been entirely accepted among all the elves, gnomes, witches, and others who are in charge of the North Pole. Oh, and since this version encompasses every single holiday ever invented by humans, the breadth of what the team has to cover to make them all a success is considerable. Julian was actually the one making sure everything ran smoothly the last few years since the previous Holiday Spirit in charge, well, let’s just say he reminded me of a certain politician who is currently bumbling his way across the world stage. *ahem*

Now that a new Holiday Spirit has been elected, including signaling clouds rising from the council chamber’s chimney as if he were the pope, Julian fears for his job. Who knows what new management has planned, right? Speculation is rife until Julian meets the guy and – you’re going to have to read the rest for yourself. All I can say is that I thoroughly enjoyed everything that follows even more than the setup.

If you like creative, imaginative worlds, if you think the North Pole could be quite different from what some have led us to believe and want to find out what that might mean, and if you’re looking for a highly entertaining read that will make you smile and could have you imagining all sorts of consequences, then you will probably like this short story as much as I do. I think it’s absolutely wonderful!
