Book Review

The mysterious world of the sidhe and their enemies comes to life yet again in this second story about Finn and Diego. Their love has already spanned centuries, has survived several lifetimes’ worth of suffering and separation, so they are determined to make things work in this newest incarnation. With Finn’s background as a pooka with a strong link to water, and Diego’s life as a human writer, it is a challenge for them to face the Otherworld together. They were in trouble before, but what they stumble into now – I was holding my breath more than once as events unfolded and their relationship is tested like never before.

Diego has lots to answer for, since he caused their movement to the sidhe world in a fit of unnecessary jealousy. Of course he regrets what he did, but it takes him a while to figure out what is going on. There is a mysterious illness that has befallen some of the warring supernatural beings already and is getting worse as they try to figure out what to do. Diego is the key, but he’ll have to overcome a few obstacles before he can fulfill his role as a savior. As it turns out he is needed on a permanent basis, but he struggles with it for quite a while.

Finn’s worst fears, those of not being “enough” come to life, encouraged by a villain who only emerges from the shadows to stoke the fires of Finn’s emotions when nobody is there to point out what they’re doing. He has a vey hard time throughout this story, but it is clear that he is crucial for the solution to work. He is way more important than he thinks, but it takes him a while to get it. The jealousy he begins to feel when he sees Diego with others is a new feeling for Finn, and it definitely does not make things easier for him.

There is a host of secondary characters in this sequel, a lot of them new and very colorful. I was happy to see Tia Carmen was back, and as for Diego’s intrepid agent, Miriam? She almost stole the show as far as I am concerned. There are plot twists, dark plans, and then the US military gets involved, so there was more than enough action to keep me entertained. The interdimensional/crossworldy aspect of human – sidhe relations also promises more complications and revelations, and I look forward to seeing more in the next volume of this series.

If you like Finn and Diego and want to know how they are doing, if two men who have fallen in love but are still working on building enough trust for their relationship to last, and if you’re looking for an entertaining read that is suspenseful, deeply emotional, and occasionally funny, then you will probably like this novel as much as I do. The ending is about as perfect as it could get!
