Nat, a successful American writer who came to Hong Kong following the love of her life, chases every girl she can after a brutal breakup. Her neighbour Isabella, who has shied away from relationships since her divorce five years earlier, finds herself compelled to help. They strike up an unlikely friendship and are soon faced with a growing desire for each other. But can their differences in age, aspirations and lifestyle be overcome?
This is the second novella in the High Rise series.
This second book from the 'High Rise' collection focuses on Dr. Isabella Douglas, practicing psychiatrist in Hong Kong and Donatella Orange, famous author better known as Nat, also residing in Hong Kong. These women are wonderfully complex, strong, determined, and seemingly incompatible. In fact, Isabella is quite surprised at how Nat really gets under her skin. Therein lies the underlying energy and fuels some incredibly entertaining interactions. There is a good deal of love/hate action being bantered about that truly kept things hopping. This story most definitely raised the riotous levels to wondrous heights. I really enjoy a good fencing match and totally adored this story!
Dr. Douglas concocts a rather curious challenge for Miss Orange. The motivation behind setting up this situation is so deliciously curious. Isabella, however, also gets maneuvered into having to participate within a challenge that Nat sets up concurrently. A third party, who is a friend of Nat's named Sophie, gets somewhat blindsided when she is included into this scenario. The moves within the moves are simply priceless and seemed completely characteristic when pitting a psychiatrist against an accomplished author. Fantabulous!
Nat has painted herself within some dark and dismal restrictions all stemming from a deeply painful breakup that occurred three years ago. It is quite understandable that Isabella would want to help Nat reverse her psychologically downward trend even if she weren't uncharacteristically smitten with her. Within Nat's invidious entrapment of her own making, she is truly pushing herself deeper and deeper into a dangerous and unhealthy state of affairs. The pact she made with Isabella provided her a brilliant window into how her life could be turned around, but deeply seated fears and ingrained old habits rear their ugly heads causing some serious bumps on the road to recovery. I found Nat to be an exceedingly fascinating yet tortured individual. Astounding!
There is a plentiful and delicious supply of hot sexual encounters. They are enticing within themselves, but really do help the story move along rather smartly. Additionally, I am not personally familiar with Hong Kong, but the first and second stories do present some breathtaking scenes that really integrate this location very handsomely along with the juicy personal yarns which certainly take center stage. The individual segments stand fairly well on their own, but the build up and linkages make it somewhat imperative to read all four stories and in the order they are presented. Really good stuff!
