He'll get by with a little help from his mate.
When Paul's long-buried past reaches out for him, having Simon at his back should make all the difference. The shy, studious teen who ditched his hometown is now a grown man with a good life, an honorable profession, and a werewolf boyfriend. So why is still so hard to go home?

A return to the beginning by Kaje Harper for this final book in their ‘Hidden Wolves’ series came as an unexpected joy. Simon and Paul began this series way back when and they’ve certainly been seen in several other installments throughout the years, but to have this novella focus on them was, in my opinion at least, a fantastic way to return to where it all began while ending on a high note.
Paul had a difficult childhood and that’s putting it mildly. His father died when he was a young boy and his mother basically went off the deep end. The kind of situation where her love for his dad was so all-encompassing she couldn’t spare any for her child. Once he was gone, she tumbled into her religion and the bottle, leaving Paul alone and emotionally abused. Paul left his hometown as soon as he graduated high school and has had no contact with his mother in the past decade. He has fought hard for his life and tries never to look back. But when his veterinary mentor sends him a letter letting him know his mother passed away, Paul and Simon decide to return and maybe lay some of the ghosts to rest.
It was very difficult to watch Paul endure this trip back to the worst parts of his life. Simon was fabulous, supportive, and everything I’ve come to expect from him over the years. Not only were these two able to deal with what they went there for, they were also able to help a lone wolf dying of shift cancer, and in that regard get Simon a little peace from his own issues with that horrible disease. All-in-all ‘Unplanned Coda’ gave me everything I’ve come to expect from this author and this series plus a little extra oomph to make it even better.
Thank you, Kaje, for these men, this world, and their stories. I treasure every one of them.
